Hamlet – Skull Held in a Hand, Steel Sculpture (Z57)

Z57 refers to the most famous scene in Hamlet: a human skull resting in an open hand. The whole sculpture is made of steel, by hand.

To be or not to be

The hand rises from a square block and holds the skull from below, with its fingers curled against the jaw and the cheekbone. The skull is shaped in detail, with deep eye sockets, a nasal opening and a full row of teeth, and it is tilted slightly, as if the person holding it were lost in thought.

Clean, bright steel

Every part has a light, satin finish, and the simple geometric base made of a cube and a flat plate gives the sculpture a modern, gallery-like character. The contrast between the organic forms and the strict base is what makes the piece interesting.

For a library, a study or a theatre lover

This sculpture is an ideal gift for an actor, a literature teacher or a lover of Shakespeare, and it looks right in a library, a study or a theatre foyer. Other works with a skull motif include our raven on a skull and a book, and more contemporary forms are shown among our modern metal sculptures.
