Wrought Iron Window Grilles
Window grilles have to do two things at once: keep intruders out and make the house look better, not worse. Our wrought iron window grilles are forged from solid steel bar and fixed securely into the wall, and they are designed as part of the facade, with scrolls, leaves and finials rather than plain prison bars.
Our window grille designs
We make them flat or bowed outwards, for single windows or whole runs, and can repeat the pattern of your gate, fence or balcony so everything matches.
How window grilles stop burglars
Window grilles are a very effective security measure. Any obstacle can be overcome in the end, but solid grilles make a break-in take many times longer and discourage most intruders. When a grille is professionally fixed with tamper-proof bolts, it cannot be removed without power tools for cutting steel, and such tools are very loud. The risk of a break-in through a window protected in this way is therefore many times lower than through an unprotected one. If security is a priority, it is worth fitting grilles at least to the most vulnerable windows, and they can be used together with electric roller shutters.
Bars are set close enough together that nobody can slip through, and the grille is anchored deep into the masonry. Because forged bar is solid rather than hollow tube, it resists cutting and bending far better than lightweight security bars.
Grilles that decorate the facade
Window grilles are very visible, so it pays to make them an ornament as well. A good idea is to design them in harmony with the other ironwork of the property: forged fences and balcony railings can have exactly the same pattern as the window grilles, and metalwork elements can make them more fanciful. We approach every building individually and advise on the density and pattern that suit it best. Besides window grilles we make door grilles and additional hinged grilles fitted just behind the front door, which can be every bit as decorative as our exterior grilles.
We measure each opening, forge the grilles to size, hot-dip galvanize and paint them, and install them. Bowed grilles leave room for flower boxes on the sill and make it easier to open the window.
Grilles for historic and modern buildings
For historic buildings we reproduce old window grilles from photographs or surviving pieces, matching their pattern and proportions; for modern houses we design simple, clean grilles that protect the windows without spoiling the architecture. Both are made to measure, hot-dip galvanized and fixed so that they cannot be removed from outside.
Window grille FAQ
Can a window grille be opened in an emergency?
Yes. We can make hinged grilles with a lock on the inside, which is often required for bedroom windows.
Will grilles match my gate?
We regularly copy motifs from wrought iron gates and fences so that the whole property looks like one design.
Can grilles be made for arched or bay windows?
Yes. Every grille is made to measure, so we can follow arched heads, bay windows and unusual shapes, and set the bars so they line up with the window frames.
