Heavy Wrought Iron Lanterns and Lamp Posts
These are our tall lamps: wrought iron lamp posts and garden lanterns from about 2 to over 5 metres (7 to 16 ft) in height. Some carry a single lantern, others are palace candelabras with five or more lights.
Every lantern is forged by hand from heavy material, with leaves and acanthus made in our own forges, and each design can be built to the height you need.
Our forged lanterns and lamp posts
Lamp posts for driveways, courtyards and parks
A tall lantern lights a whole driveway or courtyard and becomes a landmark of the property. Our designs range from slim single-light posts to massive baroque candelabras that we make for manor houses, hotels and public spaces. For lower lights, see our forged garden lamps.
Lamp posts are fixed to a concrete foundation, with the cable run inside the post. All of them are hot-dip galvanized, then painted, patinated or gilded, so they last for decades outdoors.
Forged lanterns with blacksmith acanthus
Our lanterns look the way they do because of long experience with steel and traditional techniques that have almost been forgotten. One of them is forging blacksmith acanthus. In the 19th century such acanthus decorated garden lanterns as a matter of course, because the craft was flourishing; over time fewer and fewer people wanted to do this hard work, and by the turn of the 21st century it had become a dying trade. We have revived that tradition, so our garden lanterns can carry beautiful forged acanthus and look like the lanterns of old palaces rather than today’s mass-produced lamps. Alongside traditional methods we have also developed new metalwork techniques for our designer lamps in the form of trees and sculptures.
Heavy, galvanized and built to stay
All our garden lanterns are steel, and the steel we use is thick and of very high quality. Every part is heavy and solid, and every lantern is protected by hot-dip galvanizing, so they weigh a great deal: the heaviest of our lamp posts weigh around 1,500 kg (3,300 lb). That weight makes them extremely resistant to wind, and the corrosion protection is guaranteed.
Forging is the most beautiful way of working steel, but it demands talent, a great deal of work and experience, and forged lanterns are the most difficult type of garden lantern to make. Every blacksmith who works on them is trained in our workshop for many years, because without that experience it is simply not possible to make lanterns like these. Advice and quotes are always free.
Tall garden lamp posts
Tall standing garden lamps, or lamp posts, are usually 2.5 to 3 m (8 to 10 ft) high and light a much larger area than low path lights. We place them by driveways and gates, along drives and in the central parts of a garden, and adapt the height of every design to its place; to order we also make much taller pieces, like the 5-metre lantern sculpture OGD38 or the lantern with a dragon and a phoenix OGD122.
One, two or three arms?
When choosing a lantern, start with how much light it should give. A single lantern, like the elegant forged lantern OGD107, suits paths and gates; two-arm models, such as the manor lamp OGD14, light a drive from both sides; and three-arm lanterns spread light over a larger area. For each lantern we choose the glass, milk, clear or amber, and a patina that matches the gate and fence.
Large lanterns for parks and estates
For large gardens, parks, squares and courtyards we make massive multi-arm lanterns and candelabras, such as the palace candelabra OGD21 and the palace lantern OGD118. Because the heaviest weigh around 1,500 kg, we agree how they will be set and, if needed, the foundation with the client before production. Most of our lanterns are classic, palace or manor in character, with acanthus, crowns and scrolls, but on request we also make lanterns with simple geometric forms for modern houses.
Lanterns for gates, courtyards and churches
Tall wrought iron lanterns are often placed in pairs on both sides of a gate, in the middle of a turning circle or along the avenue leading to a house. We also make them for church squares, hotel courtyards and parks, where a lantern several metres high with three or five lights becomes a landmark visible from far away.
Lantern and lamp post FAQ
How tall can a forged lamp post be?
Our standard posts are 2.2 to 3 m (7 to 10 ft) tall, and we have built sculpted lamps over 5 m (16 ft) high.
Can a lantern be mounted on a wall or pillar instead?
Yes. The heads of most lanterns can be fitted to a pillar or wall bracket; see our wrought iron wall sconces.
Do you make lanterns for public spaces?
Yes. We make lamp posts and candelabras for parks, squares, hotels and churches, built from heavier sections and galvanized for decades of use.
What height should a driveway lamp post be?
Lamp posts beside a drive or gate are usually 2.5 to 3 m (8 to 10 ft) tall, which lights the drive without shining into windows. In large courtyards and parks we make them taller and with more arms, and we always check the proportions against the gate and the house on the drawing.
