Wrought Iron Wall Sconces
A wall sconce is often the first thing a visitor sees at the front door. We hand-forge wrought iron wall lights for porches, gateways, facades and terraces, from compact lamps to brackets two metres (6.5 ft) long, as well as hanging lamps for verandas and covered terraces.
Many of our sconces carry hand-forged acanthus leaves, and every design can be resized or changed to suit your building.
Our wrought iron wall lights
Classic, palace and modern designs
Our range covers simple globe sconces, French-style lanterns on swan-neck brackets, baroque and palace sconces with gilding, plafond wall lights that sit flat against the wall, and modern geometric designs. For lamps that stand on the ground, see our forged garden lamps.
Outdoor sconces are hot-dip galvanized and painted, with clear, frosted or milk glass, and are wired for the destination country. Each one is fixed to the wall with a forged rosette or back plate that hides the cable.
Outdoor wall sconces built for the weather
On facades, terraces and balconies it pays to choose sconces that are not only beautiful but also solid, because almost every outdoor sconce is exposed to rain, wind and, to a lesser degree, frost and sun. Rain causes corrosion, so outdoor wall lights must be properly protected; ours are hot-dip galvanized and then painted several times with high-grade paints.
Wind is the second factor, and its strength depends on where the sconce is fixed, its size and the region: in the mountains, for example, it blows much harder. All our sconces are made of thick steel, so they are heavy and very strong. Even a small sconce from our workshop usually weighs over ten kilograms, larger ones several dozen, and the biggest more than 100 kg (220 lb), so the wind cannot move them. Against frost and sun, what matters most is high-quality protection of the colour, which we provide as standard.
Forged, not just metal
All our sconces are metal, steel to be precise, the most beautiful and durable material for an outdoor wall light. Store-bought sconces are often called metal too, but they are made of very thin, low-grade metal, sometimes mixed with plastic; you can tell by the weight alone. Some are so light that they are screwed only into the insulation layer of the wall. Ours need solid steel anchors, which we can supply with the sconce.
Even the same material differs depending on how it is worked. Our sconces are forged, and that is what gives them their exceptional look. Forging takes years of practice, and many of our sconces are made of hundreds of elements, each worked by hand by a master blacksmith, so every one is individual, as no two movements of a human hand are ever the same.
Facade sconces for every style
We mount outdoor sconces beside front doors, garage doors, on terraces and balconies. For classic facades we recommend sconces with lanterns and acanthus, such as the forged acanthus wall lamp OGD5 or the palace wall lamp OGD79, and for modern ones simpler forms like the design wall lamp OGD78. Where an ordinary sconce will not fit, a corner sconce OGD80 or a plafond fixed flat to the wall is the answer, and under porches, arcades and verandas we hang forged lamps on chains, like the massive baroque hanging lamp OGD47.
Hand-forged interior lighting
We also make sconces for interiors: staircases, halls and restaurants. Indoors galvanizing is not needed, so the steel can keep a raw, lacquered look and finer detail, and a set of sconces can be made in the same style as a forged chandelier, so that the hand-forged blacksmith interior lighting of a whole room forms one set.
Sconces for gateways and pillars
Besides sconces for facades, we make wall lights for gate pillars, garden walls and arcades, often with a lantern on a long bracket that lights both the wicket and the path. They can be paired with lamps on the gate piers and lanterns along the drive in one pattern, so the entrance is lit consistently from the street to the front door.
Wall sconce FAQ
Can I use these sconces indoors?
Yes. Most designs work in hallways, stairwells and living rooms, and indoors we can add brass, gilding or a finer finish.
Do you make matching sconces and lamp posts?
Yes. A sconce by the door, a lantern by the drive and lamps on the gate pillars can all share one design; see our lanterns and lamp posts.
How high should a sconce be mounted beside a door?
Beside a front door a sconce usually looks best with its light at roughly eye level or slightly above, about 1.7 to 1.9 m (5.5 to 6 ft) from the threshold, and a little higher beside very large doors. We can draw the sconce against a photo of your facade before it is made.
Can a sconce match my door canopy or gate?
Yes. Sconces are often made in the same pattern as a forged door canopy, the railings or the gate, so the entrance looks designed as one.
