Forged Fence with a Stork and Letterbox (BM9)

In BM9 a stork in a postman’s cap stands between forged roses and sunflowers, holding a bag that is actually a letterbox.

Letters go into the bag from the street and are collected from the garden through a small locked door.

A letterbox with a story

BM9 combines botanical metalwork with a practical detail. Forged roses, sunflowers and leaves form a light garden scene, and in its middle stands a stork in a postman’s cap. The bag on its shoulder is the letterbox: letters are posted into it from the street and collected from the garden through a small locked door, so the post never has to be fetched from outside the gate.

Function built into the form

Because the letterbox was part of the design from the start, it does not look like an afterthought. Its size is chosen to take standard envelopes and small magazines, the opening is protected from rain, and the inside is accessible only from the property. The rest of the span keeps the elegance of a decorative panel.

Ideas for the entrance

The stork postman works best next to a pedestrian gate, where visitors and the postman see it first. The scene around it can be changed: other flowers, a different bird, or a house number held in the stork’s beak. Children love it, and it quickly becomes the landmark by which the house is recognised.

Practical details of the letterbox

The bag is made of steel sheet with a lid that keeps rain out of the slot, and its inside door has a lock and keys.

A newspaper holder can be added under the bag, designed together with the stork so that it looks like part of the sculpture rather than an accessory.

The stork can also hold a sign with the family name or the house number in its beak, which makes the entrance easy to find for visitors and couriers.

A tidy front of the house

Fence spans with built-in letterboxes are chosen where order at the entrance and a consistent look of the whole property matter.
