Hunting-Style Steel Openwork Gate (BM25)

BM25 is a five-metre openwork gate where a capercaillie displays on top of a forged tree and deer move through the undergrowth below. Thousands of hand-made elements combine into one scene.

It is double-leaf, fully three-dimensional and hot-dip galvanized, with a matching wicket in the photos. Free-standing animals in the same spirit are among our steel animal sculptures.

Metal as a sculptor’s material

BM25 treats steel not as a construction material but as a sculptor’s medium. The whole form is built in space, far from flat divisions and standard driveway solutions. Two forged trees form the leaves, their branches meeting in the middle; a capercaillie displays on top, deer move through the undergrowth and smaller birds perch among the leaves. The gate works with light, shadow and depth, so it looks different from every angle and at every time of day.

Composition before rhythm

Here composition matters more than regular rhythm. The steel elements form a dynamic structure that suggests movement and natural continuity, and the gate is not decoration added to a fence but the visual centre of the whole property. In the photos it is shown with its matching wicket and with fence spans of reeds and herons, which continue the woodland theme along the boundary.

Five metres, two leaves

The gate is about five metres wide and double-leaf, with thousands of hand-made elements combined into one scene. Its weight is carried by a hidden steel frame inside the trees, and the hinges and posts are designed for the load, with automation available. All parts are hot-dip galvanized and patinated, so the gate is as durable as it is spectacular.

Opening a gate this deep needs space and planning. We design the hinge line and the swing of the leaves so that the trees clear the drive completely, and we position the automation behind the pillars, out of sight. On narrow plots the scene can be made as a sliding gate instead. Either way, the leaves are balanced so that they move smoothly despite their weight and depth, and the scene can be finished in a natural patina or with coloured birds and leaves.

No prefabricated segments

The gate is made in our workshop by artistic blacksmithing and hand forming of steel. We use no ready-made segments or prefabricated parts, which lets us fit the form precisely to the space, the width of the drive and the architecture of the fence. Over time a gate like this does not lose its visual value; it becomes a lasting part of the place that the whole property is identified with.
