Classic Fence (BP232)

BP232 is simple and classic: arched bars beneath a Greek key band, mounted on a brick wall. Because the shapes are uncomplicated, it is elegant and economical at the same time.

Simple designs depend on workmanship, and this one is neatly made with clean welds. Although we specialise in complex pieces, we take on any order our clients wish.

Greek key and arched bars

BP232 relies on two simple ideas. The first is a row of vertical bars whose tops follow a shallow arch in every span; the second is a band of Greek key pattern, the meander known from ancient temples, which runs along the panel just below the top. Mounted on a brick wall, the fence looks orderly and timeless, and it lets the garden stay visible from the street.

Because the shapes are plain, the quality of the work shows at once. Straight bars, even spacing and neat, clean welds are what make a simple fence look refined, and that is where we put our attention on a design like this.

What a forged fence panel is made of

Each span, or panel, is a complete frame: top and bottom rails, the bars between them and the decorative band. The bars pass through or are welded to the rails, and the Greek key is built from short bent sections joined into one continuous line. The frame is then fixed to the pillars with brackets or set into them, depending on how the wall is built.

A well-made panel keeps its shape for decades. Thick enough sections stop it from bending if someone leans on it, and good corrosion protection under the paint keeps rust away from the joints, the place where poorly made fences usually fail first.

Before production we check the height of the wall, the spacing of the pillars and any slope along the frontage. From those measurements we prepare a drawing showing the exact number of bars in every span, so that the arches look identical even where the pillars stand at slightly different distances.

Simple forms, many possibilities

A clean design like BP232 is easy to adapt. The arch can be raised for a more festive look or flattened for a modern house; the Greek key can be replaced with a band of rings or a simple lattice; and the bars can end in spears or small balls. It also works as a base for a matching driveway gate and a pedestrian gate, which tie the whole frontage together.

  • suitable for short front fences and long boundaries alike,
  • transparent, so it does not shut the garden off,
  • easy to install on brick, stone or concrete walls,
  • finished in black or any colour from the RAL chart.

Simple designs are also quicker to make than ornate ones, which helps when the boundary is long. Plain and ornate panels can be compared side by side in our overview of iron fencing.
