Forged Fence with a Fox (BM21)

In BM21 a life-size fox sits quietly among forged trees and undergrowth. Both the fox and the trees are three-dimensional.

Fences like this are perfect for houses with a fine garden, for log and mountain-style homes and for houses on the edge of the forest. The fox can sit, as here, or take any other pose.

A scene, not a panel

BM21 is not built on a classic span with a repeated pattern. It is a three-dimensional scene in which metal creates a picture: a life-size fox sits quietly among branches, leaves and grasses, all shaped by hand. The composition is not symmetrical; lines run freely, as in nature, which gives the span movement and depth.

A modelled fox

The fox is not a cut-out silhouette. It is a fully modelled form with a clear surface texture: the fur is suggested by hammered and chased lines, the tail is curled around the body, and the head is turned slightly towards the street. It can sit, as here, or take any other pose, such as stalking, running or watching from behind a tree.

No frame around the picture

There is no classic frame limiting the composition. The elements flow into side parts shaped like tree trunks, so the span does not look like a closed panel but like a fragment of a larger forest. That makes it easy to repeat along a boundary or to combine with gates and wickets in the same style.

Where foxes feel at home

Fences like this are perfect for houses with a fine garden, for log and mountain-style homes and for houses on the edge of a forest. They are also popular with owners of hunting lodges and country retreats; similar wildlife fences have gone to clients in Canada, from Ontario to British Columbia. More animal scenes can be compared among our wildlife gates and fences.

Installation and finish

Spans like BM21 are fixed between masonry pillars or between forged tree trunks that act as posts. The fox and the trees are galvanized and finished in natural colours, rusty orange for the fur, dark brown for the bark and green for the leaves, or in one patina if you prefer a quieter look.

Because the composition is open, wind passes through it easily, and the span needs no special foundations beyond those of a normal fence panel. That makes a wildlife span easy to add to an existing fence as a single decorative accent. Two foxes, a vixen with cubs or a fox chasing a hare are also possible.

Not a pattern from a catalogue

BM21 was made for an owner who was not looking for a catalogue pattern but for an individual form born of artistic blacksmithing. Fences of this kind do not compete with standard solutions; they belong to another category, as useful objects that are also outdoor sculptures. Each scene is designed individually, taking the light, the background and the viewpoint into account, so it reflects the identity of the property.
