Heron in Reeds Forged Fence (BM49)

BM49 is a hand-made span with a forged steel heron standing among tall bulrushes, reeds and water lilies. The heron was made in our workshop in three dimensions, just like a real bird, and then set into the span.

Every detail is made of steel by hand, and the whole span is hot-dip galvanized.

A wall of bulrushes

Dozens of bulrushes rise across the span, their heads forged as small dark cylinders and their leaves drawn out long and thin, so the plants create a dense, vertical rhythm. The grey heron stands among them, half hidden, as if waiting for a fish. Red water lilies lie at the base, and gnarled trunks close the scene at both ends.

Shadows that change with the sun

The span is a three-dimensional form, not a flat outline. On sunny days the bulrushes and the bird cast sharp shadows on the ground, and the scene changes as you walk along it.

Colours and setting

The heron can be painted grey or white, the reeds green or left in a dark patina, and the lilies picked out in red, pink or white. A heron span looks most natural beside a garden pond, a stream or a lake shore, but it also gives an ordinary street fence a calm, recognisable feature. Several heron spans can alternate with plain reed spans along a long boundary. We make some of the most unusual fences in the world and will gladly fulfil your wishes.
