Forged Baroque Stair Railing (BA59)

BA59 curves around a sweeping flight of steps, its panels filled with forged acanthus in a warm bronze finish.

It is demanding to make; acanthus is one of the hardest details in blacksmithing, and a curved railing needs every panel to follow the stairs exactly.

For grand outdoor stairs

Railings like this are made with great attention to detail, galvanized and painted for life outdoors. Compare it with the other railings for outside steps we have built.

Baroque does not do restraint

In BA59 the ornament is layered, dynamic and clearly sculptural. Acanthus dominates the composition: developed leaves with sharply modelled edges pass into volutes and closed medallions, and the relief stands out from the plane of the railing, giving it depth and visual weight. The play of light and shadow on the leaves changes through the day, which is the essence of baroque ironwork.

Balancing the mass

The structural frame serves the richness of the form without losing stability: solid posts and a firmly drawn handrail balance the visual mass of the ornament. The elements were made in stages in the fire, from the main segments to the acanthus details refined by hand, which requires both technical precision and a feel for historical style.

Outdoors, a sculptural railing like this is hot-dip galvanized before colouring, so the deep recesses between the leaves, where water could otherwise collect, are protected too.

Medallions that balance the weight

Baroque exterior railings need a carefully planned compositional axis and medallions placed so that they balance the visual weight. Every acanthus, volute and change of line should follow the logic of the style, and the right choice of steel sections and of hand forging decides whether the finished railing keeps the monumentality and elegance proper to the baroque.
