Forged Steel Fence with a Grape Scene (BM45)

BM45 shows a climbing grapevine forged in steel, with leaves and tendrils weaving across the span.

The panel in the photo is 250 cm long and 200 cm high (about 8 by 6.5 ft), and both appearance and size can be adapted. It is ideal for wineries, wine bars and homes with large gardens.

A vine growing across the span

BM45 shows a grapevine climbing across a fence span. A twisted trunk rises from the base, branches spread to both sides, and broad vine leaves, curling tendrils and heavy bunches of grapes fill the panel. The composition has real depth, so it looks like a living plant rather than a flat ornament. The span in the photos is 250 cm long and 200 cm high, and both the appearance and the size can be adapted.

Bunches forged berry by berry

The grapes are the most time-consuming part. Each bunch is assembled from dozens of small forged balls, joined around a stem so that the bunch tapers naturally, and the leaves are cut from sheet steel, veined and curved by hand. The tendrils are drawn out from thin rod and wound into spirals. Together they give the vine a richness of detail that catches light and shadow throughout the day.

Ornament with elegant proportions

Although the ornament is rich, it keeps elegant proportions, so the spans stay legible and harmonious even on longer runs. Plant fences change the way a property is perceived: instead of cold geometric regularity they bring soft lines and a gentle sense of movement, which is why nature-inspired designs are chosen where a fence should be more than a barrier.

For wineries and wine lovers

The grape motif is ideal for wineries, wine bars, restaurants and homes with large gardens or pergolas. At a vineyard, a run of grapevine spans can lead visitors from the road to the cellar door, and the same vine can climb a gate, a sign or a balcony railing. We have made grape designs for clients with vineyards, and the motif travels well, from Europe’s wine regions to California and Ontario.

Colour and finish

The span is hot-dip galvanized, then finished according to the setting. A natural steel or dark bronze patina looks noble and timeless; a coloured version with green leaves and purple or golden grapes is livelier and suits a garden or a restaurant terrace. Colours are applied by hand, so each bunch can have its own shade, and they sit on a zinc base that keeps rust away.

Combining with other spans

A grapevine span can stand alone as a decorative accent in a simpler fence, or be repeated along the whole boundary with small variations in the layout of the vine. It also combines well with spans of grain, sunflowers or poppies, telling a story of the harvest along the fence. All elements are made in our workshop with care for the continuity of lines, the rhythm of the composition and the durability of the structure.

More nature scenes like this one can be seen among our decorative steel fences.

Questions about the grapevine span

Can a real vine grow on it? Yes, the forged vine can be combined with living plants; the steel is galvanized and painted, so it is not harmed by foliage or watering, and in summer the real and the forged leaves mix in a charming way.

Can it be made as a gate? The same vine can cover the leaves of a driveway gate or a wicket. We build the gate on a hidden frame and design the vine so that it splits naturally where the leaves meet.

How long does it last? With hot-dip galvanizing under the paint, a grapevine span is made to last for decades outdoors; the only maintenance is an occasional wash and, after many years, a touch-up of the colours.
