Forged Palace Fence with Openwork Posts (BP51)

BP51 replaces concrete piers with massive openwork steel posts, topped here with lanterns, and the fence panels run between them in palace style.

Fences like this are winning more and more admirers for their exclusive look. They are often part of a larger entrance; see our palace gate sets.

Openwork posts instead of masonry

The most striking feature of BP51 is its posts. Instead of concrete or brick piers, massive openwork steel columns carry the fence: square shafts filled with lattice and gilded ornament, crowned with gilded vases and, at the entrance, with lanterns. Between them run classic panels of bars and diamond lattice with gilded leaves. The panels are restrained; the richness of the fence comes from the posts.

The photos show the fence around a palace with lawns and a garden statue, together with the gate set BP50, whose taller openwork columns and lattice leaves continue the same design.

Why choose steel posts

Openwork posts let light and views pass through the whole length of the fence, so even a tall boundary does not wall off the grounds. They also simplify construction: there is no masonry to build and render, only a foundation for each post. And they give the fence a look that is immediately different from the usual combination of panels and brick piers.

  • posts with lattice, scrolls or plain openwork,
  • vases, finials, balls or lanterns as post tops,
  • panels in diamond lattice or straight bars,
  • dark green, black or graphite with gilded details.

Part of a complete entrance

BP51 is designed to complement the gate set BP50, but the posts and panels can be combined with other gates as well. Complete entrances in the same spirit, with gates, wickets and posts drawn together, are presented as palace gate sets.

Lanterns at the entrance

At the gate, the openwork posts of BP51 are taller and carry lanterns instead of vases, which marks the entrance and lights the drive at night. The cables run inside the post shafts, so nothing is visible from outside. Elsewhere along the fence the gilded vases keep the line festive in daylight.

One material from post to span

Because the posts and the spans are both steel, every element of the structure is load-bearing as well as decorative, and the whole looks more uniform than a combination of metal and masonry. The key is precision and the right proportion between span and post. This is a choice for investors who expect a durable structure and an elegant, timeless form without heavy, massive supports.
