External Stair Railing (BA13)
BA13 is a richly ornamented railing that works on outdoor steps or balconies, and indoors too. Tall panels of scrolls and fleur motifs rise beside the stairs in the photo.

It is hot-dip galvanized, completely weatherproof and available in any colour.
A fan at the centre
The main panel of BA13 is built around a large fan motif set on the axis of the stair, with hand-forged scrolls and fleur motifs arranged around it. Tall side panels frame the steps, and the handrail follows the flight in a smooth line. Although the composition is rich, the openings between the elements keep it light.
Shaped for changing angles
The steel was formed at high temperature and modelled by hand to give the lines their plasticity and varying thickness. Where the slope of the handrail changes and the infill fields meet, precise fitting is essential, and that is where most of the work on a railing like this goes.
Indoors or out
BA13 works on outdoor steps and balconies, and also inside the house. Outdoors it is hot-dip galvanized, which makes it completely weatherproof; indoors, galvanizing is optional and the finish can be finer, for example with gilded details.
Every railing of this kind is made in stages, from the load-bearing posts and the forged details to the final fitting and surface protection. It can be finished in any colour, and similar entrances can be compared with our wrought iron railings for steps.
The posts are usually fixed to the side of the steps, which keeps the treads clear and the anchors dry.
Ergonomics at the entrance
When designing an entrance, the line of the handrail must follow the changing angle of the stair, with both ease of use and the proportion between the height of the railing and the width of the landing in mind. In designs with rich detail a clear compositional axis matters, as does keeping the visual mass of the lower part under control. The rich detail of BA13 goes well with stone cladding and a classical facade, giving the entrance a strong, formal accent.
