Forged Stair Railing (BA65)

BA65 is built from large twisted elements finished with forged decoration, rising along a stone staircase.

Every detail is made by hand, so each part of the railing is unique.

Twisted bars on a stone stair

BA65 is built from large twisted elements, turned hot so that each bar shows an even spiral along its length, and finished with forged decoration between them. On the stone staircase where it was installed, the dense rhythm of spirals runs along the whole flight and gives the stairwell a strong, crafted character. The dark finish deepens the shadows in the twists and shows off the hand work.

How twisting is done

A square bar is heated along a measured length, clamped at one end and turned with a long wrench until the corners wind into a spiral. The pitch of the twist depends on the heat and the number of turns, so matching dozens of bars takes skill and patience. Because the work is done by hand, every part of the railing is unique, while the overall pattern stays regular.

For other ways of combining twisted bars with scrolls and leaves, see the staircase railings made to measure in our portfolio.
