Interior Wrought Iron Stair Railings
Inside a house, the staircase is often the first thing guests see. We hand-forge interior stair railings and mezzanine balustrades in baroque, rococo, glamour, manor, classic and modern styles, from light white-and-gold designs to heavy palace balustrades with brass acanthus.
We specialise in projects that need a great deal of hand work, and we are happy to combine materials, for example glass with forged acanthus.
Our interior railing designs
Handrails, finishes and installation
Handrails can be oak, walnut or other hardwoods, steel or brass. Ironwork can be black, graphite, white, ivory, old gold or brass-toned, with gilded or patinated details, in gloss or matt.
We advise on the right railing for your stairs and building, survey on site, prepare drawings and install. If nothing in our catalogue fits, we design a new pattern or work from a sketch or photo. We also restore historic balustrades and build complete wrought iron staircases.
Interior stair railings made to measure
We make interior stair railings fully matched to the structure of the stairs and the character of the interior, from classic forged railings to elaborate forms that need precise three-dimensional modelling. Every railing is made to measure, following the geometry of the flight, the floor-to-floor height and the proportions of the room. We survey, design and install, and we also restore and reconstruct historic stair railings from photographs or surviving fragments. Our interior iron railings cover staircases as well as mezzanines, galleries and open double-height spaces.
We make railings for straight flights and grand staircases in family homes, residences and townhouses. The structure is steel and the detail is forged by hand, so our steel railings look light yet are completely rigid and stable. The handrail can be steel, wood or brass, chosen to suit the stairs and the interior.
Modern interior stair railings
Modern railings do not have to be mass-produced or characterless. We also make forged railings with a contemporary form: simple geometric lines, restrained detail and carefully chosen proportions. They suit minimalist and loft interiors and modern houses, and the steel can be combined with glass or a wooden handrail, as in our modern loft railing with glass BA69 and the traditional-modern railing with glass BA68. Any of these modern wrought iron balustrades can be adapted to your stairs and interior.
Curved, winding and fan-shaped stairs
Curved railings are used where stairs or mezzanines follow a curved line. They must fit the radius precisely, and on curved stairs the structure has to be shaped in several planes at once to follow both the curve and the pitch of the flight. This is one of the most demanding types of interior railing and calls for structural experience and an exact replica of the stairs in the workshop.
Railings for stairs with fan-shaped treads, where each step has a different width, demand very precise measurements and a faithful record of the stair geometry before production starts; every element is fitted individually to the changing angle and width, and a well-made railing of this kind is one of the most impressive features of a staircase. Railings for winding stairs with turns are structurally simpler, but they still need an exact fit to the pitch and the change of direction, as in our railing for winding stairs BA30.
Handrails, stair barriers and mezzanine railings
A handrail can be a separate element fixed to the wall or an integral part of the railing. Depending on the stairs we make single wall handrails as well as complete railings with an integrated handrail, always matched to the height of the flight and the people who use it, because a well-designed handrail affects both comfort and safety.
For shorter flights, landings or cellar stairs we also make lighter stair barriers with the same care for detail and solid fixing, such as the minimal stair railing BA17 and the classic twisted stair railing BA65.
We also make interior railings for mezzanines and galleries, as classic panels or one continuous structure. A mezzanine railing is often the centrepiece of the interior, so we pay great attention to its proportions and detail, as in the white glamour mezzanine railing BA23.
Designing interior artistic railings
We design interior railings as an integral part of the architecture of the room, based on our own patterns or developed from a photo, a sketch or your idea. Our experience in artistic blacksmithing lets us design and make even the most demanding three-dimensional forms while keeping full control of quality. Alongside railings we also make complete steel staircases with their load-bearing structure and treads: traditional, self-supporting or spiral stairs, with treads in wood or other materials, designed together with the railing as one whole.
Interior railing FAQ
Can a wrought iron railing go on a wooden staircase?
Yes. For timber stairs we design lighter railings and fixing details suited to wood.
Do you make railings for curved and spiral stairs?
Yes, curved and spiral stairs are a large part of our work; every panel is forged to follow the stair exactly.
How do I choose a stair railing for my interior?
Start from the style of the stairs and the whole space: proportions, the type of detail and the finish matter most. Send us photos and we will suggest designs that suit the room.
Are wrought iron stair railings safe?
Yes, when they are properly designed and installed. The right height, the spacing of the uprights and a stable handrail are key, and we design to the regulations that apply where you live.
